Reaching out to children in their communities

Nisha Bhakat, a YOUCAN Earth Ambassador, is keenly engaging with kids in her apartment to recycle existing materials for using them up during Durga Puja in her community in Kolkata for decoration, using plant based utensils etc.. She started with asking them some basic questions. “So, do you have Environmental Studies in school?” The resounding yes made her smile, and she followed up with “Then what comes to mind when I say plastic...or thermocole?” There was a chorus of “Pollution!” She placed her final question: “Have you thought of how much we add to that during festivals?” Realisation dawned upon them as she asked them these questions, and without compromising on the spirit of Puja, they ended up making it a plastic free Durga Puja.
