Journey Through the Wild: Meet Navaneeth Krishnan, EEF 2024-25

Illustrated by Sanath K Udupa

Navaneeth's path has been a fascinating evolution, a true "Journey through the wild" that has led him from capturing breathtaking moments behind a camera lens to passionately educating the future stewards of our planet. We are thrilled to welcome Navaneeth as a vital part of the YouCAN family.

Navaneeth's early years, as he playfully reveals, were marked by a certain adventurous spirit. From accidental cricket-induced window repairs to late-night doorbell serenades, his childhood hints at an energetic and perhaps slightly mischievous nature. Yet, amidst these youthful escapades, a creative spark was igniting. His early engagement with photography and digital tools laid the foundation for a journey that would eventually merge his playful curiosity with a profound connection to the natural world.

Then came a pivotal moment, an exclamation that echoed with possibility: a National Geographic "Your Shot" Photography Fellowship! This was the catalyst that launched Navaneeth into a world of exploration. For three transformative years, his lens became his passport, taking him across 14 countries and deep into 30 tiger reserves. This immersive experience, traversing the diverse landscapes from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, honed his eye for detail and deepened his understanding of the intricate beauty and fragility of the wild.

After four years in the IT world, he made a bold decision to follow his passion, resigning to establish "BeWildered," a travel company rooted in his love for exploration. This entrepreneurial venture showcased his desire to share the wonders he had witnessed. His creative talents also led him to contribute to renowned animation movies, demonstrating a diverse skillset and a knack for visual storytelling. Simultaneously, his work with the prestigious Wildlife Institute of India further solidified his commitment to conservation and his expertise in the field.

This period, though marked by challenges like the global pandemic, ultimately saw him emerge with renewed purpose and impact.

Building on a year of thorough research and analysis, Navaneeth launched "Flying Hornbill," a brand dedicated to making wildlife travel accessible while increasingly focusing on nature education. Recognizing the power of visual media, he and his team embarked on an ambitious project: creating documentaries that spanned the length and breadth of India, from the coastal landscapes of Marakanam to the eastern reaches of Manipur. This marked a transition from simply capturing wildlife to actively using his skills to educate and raise awareness about the natural world.

Driven by a growing desire to contribute beyond documentation and tourism, Navaneeth's path intersected with "SUYAM Charitable Trust." Witnessing their impactful work with marginalized children – providing education, shelter, and support – deeply resonated with him. This encounter sparked a profound realization: his knowledge and passion for nature could be a powerful tool for empowerment.

Inspired by the nature education principles he gained during his YouCAN residency, he began working with these children, ingeniously using traditional Indian games and specially designed card games to make learning about nature engaging and accessible.

Continuing his innovative approach to education, Navaneeth is also introducing the concept of "NATURE AMBASSADORS" within schools. These young representatives will be given unique opportunities to connect with educators nationwide, gain firsthand experience in documentary filmmaking and naturalism, and learn to guide nature walks within their own cities. This initiative embodies his vision of nurturing a new generation of environmental leaders, empowered with knowledge and practical skills.

Navaneeth's journey is a testament to the power of following one's passion and the incredible impact that can be achieved when diverse experiences converge with a strong sense of purpose. From behind the lens to the forefront of education, his story is an inspiring reminder that our individual journeys, when guided by a love for the natural world, can contribute to a brighter future for all. We are delighted to have Navaneeth with YouCAN, and we eagerly anticipate the inspiring contributions he will undoubtedly make.
