Ocean's Calling: Meet Arpita Dutta, EEF 2024-25

Illustrated by Sanath K Udupa

Arpita Dutta's connection to the ocean is more than just a profession; it's a calling. Her journey reveals a deep passion for marine life, a commitment to education, and an inspiring drive to protect our precious marine ecosystems.

From exploring India's diverse coastlines to empowering the next generation of ocean stewards, Arpita's story is one of discovery, dedication, and ultimately, finding her purpose.

Who is Arpita? She's a daughter, a sister, an educator, a marine biologist, and a nature enthusiast. She's someone whose identity is intertwined with the ocean, a place where she feels most at home.

After completing her Master's in Marine Biology, Arpita's journey took her to the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) in Goa.

Working in the Benthos Lab, under the mentorship of the internationally renowned scientist Dr. Baban Ingole, she experienced a pivotal moment. Witnessing a penguin brought in by her mentor solidified her decision to dedicate her life to marine research and conservation.

Her work encompasses a wide range of marine environments, from rocky beaches and mangroves to sandy shores, wetlands, and even aquaculture. Each ecosystem is a source of fascination and a call to action.

Her research vessel, a symbol of her scientific endeavors, carries her to these diverse locations, where she meticulously studies and observes.

Arpita's connection to marine life is deeply personal. It's a connection built on years of observation, study, and a profound love for the creatures she encounters. From mudskippers and gastropods to the astonishing Elysia sea slug, she knows them intimately.

By 2020, Arpita recognized a growing gap in public understanding of marine life. While adults often lacked awareness, she found a spark of curiosity in children and young adults. This realization fueled her passion to educate and she began leading 'Shore Walks,' guiding groups of all ages through coastal ecosystems. She taught them not only about the incredible diversity of marine species but also about responsible exploration and conservation. "What is there under your feet?" she would ask, encouraging them to look closer, to discover the hidden wonders that often go unnoticed.

Driven by a desire to raise awareness about climate change and ocean conservation, Arpita found her community in 2024 with YouCAN. Surrounded by like-minded individuals, she felt her purpose crystallize. Her upcoming EEF residency with YouCAN in 2024-25 marks an exciting new chapter.
